Congratulations to Professor Gordon Dougan, an Honorary Fellow of ӽ紫ýand Emeritus Professor in the University’s Department of Medicine, who has been made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the King’s Birthday Honours 2025.

“I am delighted to receive this important recognition for my work and the people I have worked with and for,” said Gordon. “Applying science to the benefit of people and health is what I have been working toward throughout my career. I can recommend this path to anyone.”

Gordon is an internationally recognised expert in vaccinology, global health and infections. Formerly the Director of the Infection Health Challenge area at the Wellcome Trust, he was Head of Pathogens at the Wellcome Sanger Institute (WTSI) for over a decade and worked in the pharmaceutical industry (Wellcome Foundation/GSK) for part of his career, developing novel vaccines and other medicines. He has worked as an advisor to health agencies, industry, academia and regulatory agencies. He is an expert on the molecular basis of infection with a strong emphasis on pathogenic mechanisms/immunity, genomics, disease tracking and antibiotic resistance. He is currently President of the Microbiology Society of the UK.

Professor Dame Ijeoma Uchegbu, Wolfson’s President, said of Gordon’s award: 

“I am absolutely delighted to see that Gordon has been recognised for his tireless work in the area of infectious diseases. We first met at the Wellcome Trust a few years ago, and my admiration of Gordon’s work began in those early meetings. His efforts to bring treatments and preventions to different areas of the globe is truly exemplary, and his recognition is so richly deserved.”
