Postgraduate Fees & Funding

Generous donations from alumni and friends of the College support a wide range of awards to help fund your studies at Wolfson.

Only those students who have been accepted by the University and then offered College membership at ÐÔÊӽ紫ýare eligible for any of the scholarships offered through ÐÔÊӽ紫ý. 

Eligible applicants can apply for ÐÔÊӽ紫ý Scholarships by opting in for funding through the Applicant Portal when they submit their application for postgraduate study. Preference for this award will be given to applicants who specify ÐÔÊӽ紫ý as their first or second choice in their admissions application. Preference will also be given to students who have applied by the funding deadline for their course.

The allocation of funds is made by the ÐÔÊӽ紫ýStudent Scholarship Committee, and individual scholarship amounts may vary from year to year as current holders graduate. Postgraduate scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic merit. Some awards are renewable, subject to satisfactory academic progress.

Some funding is available to students studying any subject, and some is restricted to particular subjects.
 

ÐÔÊӽ紫ý funding

ÐÔÊӽ紫ý distributes around £1 million each year to postgraduate students in the form of fully-funded studentships and partial awards. ÐÔÊӽ紫ýalso offers  in the form of hardship funds, sports awards, travel and research grants, and musical scholarships.
 

Match-funded awards

ÐÔÊӽ紫ý offers match-funded studentships delivered by the College in partnership with other University institutions and departments. For match-funded awards, candidates need to ensure their applications are submitted before the relevant University or Department funding deadline. The initial selection process for all match-funded awards is managed by our partners, not by the College. No separate scholarship application is required.

Balgobin Family Scholarship

The Balgobin Family Scholarship provides £3000 per year to support the studies of a mature undergraduate or postgraduate student from a developing country, with a preference for students from the Caribbean. The award is funded by a generous donation from Dr Rolph Balgobin, an alumnus of ÐÔÊӽ紫ý. (Please note: the new amount of £3,000 is correct for 2025 entry, although the Postgraduate funding portal is still displaying the former amount of £2,000).

Cambridge Africa Changemakers & ÐÔÊӽ紫ý PhD Scholarship

ÐÔÊӽ紫ý partners with the  to fund one  each year. This is a full-cost scholarship for PhD students in any subject, open to candidates from any country in Africa. The partner-funded award is tenable only at ÐÔÊӽ紫ý. The scholarship aims to support talented PhD students who require financial assistance to take up their places at the University. Priority will be given to students whose research contributes to the development of the continent and to climate-resilient and sustainable futures. This programme is closely affiliated with the .

Cambridge International & ÐÔÊӽ紫ý PhD Studentship

ÐÔÊӽ紫ýpartners with the Cambridge Trust in funding up to 12 PhD studentships each year, covering tuition and maintenance costs for doctoral study in any subject. Around half are awarded to home-fee status students as Vice-Chancellor's PhD Studentships. The rest are awarded to  status students as Cambridge International PhD Studentships. The College often partners with specific Faculties, Departments or Doctoral Training Partnerships to co-fund these awards. In 2024/2025, preference may be given to applicants in Chemistry, Physics, Physiology, Development & Neuroscience (PDN) and/or in subjects related to the College's Interdisciplinary Research Hubs. (Gender, Global Health, Sustainability & Conservation and Race, Ethnicity, Culture and Heritage.) These awards are offered in partnership with the Cambridge Trust.

Richard Chancellor’s Journey PhD Scholarship in Slavonic Studies

Postgraduate (PhD) | £10,000 (annual) | Home & Overseas

This scholarship will offer at least £10,000 per year towards the cost of PhD fees and maintenance for a home-fee rated student pursuing doctoral studies in any area of Slavonic studies. The College will make every effort to partner with other funding bodies in order to increase the amount of the award to cover a larger portion of the annual fees and maintenance costs (but this cannot be guaranteed).

The scholarship was established by a ÐÔÊӽ紫ý alumnus in honour of explorer and expert navigator Richard Chancellor (1521-1556), who in 1553 became the first Westerner to discover the entrance to the White Sea and the first English person to visit Moscow, where he met Ivan the Terrible and established trading relations between the Tsardom of Muscovy and England.

Teape PhD Scholarship in Hindu-Christian Studies

The Teape Scholarship in Hindu-Christian Studies is funded by the Teape Trust, originally established by Cambridge alumnus William Marshall Teape (1862-1944), to further study of the relationship between Hindu and Christian thought. Informal enquiries regarding potential projects may be made to , Senior Lecturer in Hindu Studies. Candidates for the Teape Scholarship are expected to have applied to all other sources of financial support open to them. For a student who has no support or only partial support from any other source, the scholarship will contribute up to £14,000 towards the annual cost of fees and maintenance. The Scholarship may be held for a maximum of three years, subject to satisfactory academic progress. The scholarship is only tenable at ÐÔÊӽ紫ý, which will endeavour to secure additional funding to support the recipient, although this cannot be guaranteed.

Teo Wang Gungwu Scholarship [available 2027-2028]

This award is funded by a gift from ÐÔÊӽ紫ýalumnus Anthony Teo in honour of the long and distinguished career of Professor Wang Gungwu and his outstanding scholarship in studies of China and the Chinese overseas. Awards of up to £6000 are available to support research and scholarship in the Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities, particularly in fields related to East Asian studies.

The Mary Hesse PhD Scholarship

Established in 2018 by a generous bequest from Professor Mary Hesse, a Fellow of ÐÔÊӽ紫ý from 1965-1992, the scholarship will provide at least £10,000 to support a PhD student pursuing research in Arts, Humanities or Social Sciences. The College will also seek partnerships with other University funding bodies in order to increase the amount of the annual award (although this is never guaranteed). Awards are based on merit and financial need.

ÐÔÊӽ紫ý PhD Studentship in Geopolitics

The ÐÔÊӽ紫ý PhD Studentship in Geopolitics will provide up to £24,000 per year for 3 years to support a doctoral student working on a topic in Geopolitics. The College will make every effort to secure partner funding from other University sources for strong applicants to meet the full cost of fees and maintenance for the recipient, but this cannot be guaranteed.

Applicants pursuing a PhD in Politics & International Relations or in History are likely to be the strongest candidates for this award, but applications will be considered from students working in any subject, provided their research topic falls within one of the key research areas of the University’s Centre for Geopolitics. 

Competitive applications will be those from students whose proposed research applies historical analysis, area studies expertise, political science and the experience of practitioners to address major problems of conflict and world order: past, present or future.

Edgeworth Family Scholarship for Medical Research

Postgraduate (Master’s & PhD) | £8,000 (annual) | Home & Overseas

This scholarship provides £8,000 per year towards the costs of a postgraduate student engaged in medical research. It is funded by a generous legacy from the estate of Laura Hester Edgeworth in memory of her son Jonathan. Preference will be given to students engaged in research related to passive immunotherapy, particularly in relation to HIV prevention and treatment.

The College will make every effort to partner with other funding bodies to increase the amount of the award, but this cannot be guaranteed.

The Professor Jane Clarke PhD Studentship will provide up to £10,000 per year for three years for one woman pursuing a PhD in a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics field in which women are underrepresented. The College will make every effort to secure additional funding through partnerships with other University institutions to support the studentship recipient, although this cannot be guaranteed.

This studentship, named in Professor Clarke’s honour, has been funded by donors from the ÐÔÊӽ紫ýcommunity who wish to encourage applications from exceptional women and address underrepresentation of women in some STEM fields.

Aziz Foundation Scholarship

The Aziz Foundation has partnered with ÐÔÊӽ紫ý to fund scholarships for home-fee rated students who are actively engaged in British Muslim communities and who wish to study for a Master's degree at the University of Cambridge in order to improve access for individuals from social groups who historically have been underrepresented at the University. An Aziz Foundation Scholarship will cover the University Composition Fee for the course.  The scholarships are aimed at those who are dedicated to community service, social development and effective advocacy within and for British Muslim communities.

'Get In Cambridge' Master's Scholarship at ÐÔÊӽ紫ý

Each year ÐÔÊӽ紫ý funds at least one  award to support a British Black, Bangladeshi or Pakistani Master’s student from a low-income household with experience of educational disadvantage. The award is intended to cover University fees and living expenses when the maximum postgraduate grant / loan is taken with government student finance.

The overriding purpose of the Get In initiative is to increase the number of students from historically under-represented ethnic minority communities at Cambridge, in order to become representative of UK society, at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. Awards are made in consultation with the Cambridge Trust. All eligible offer holders are considered.

ÐÔÊӽ紫ý Scholarship for Women Entrepreneurs from Emerging Economies

Postgraduate (Master’s) | £25,000 ~ Â£53,000 (annual) | Overseas

The Scholarship for Women Entrepreneurs from Emerging Economies will provide at least £25,000 for one student pursuing a Master’s-level course. While not guaranteed, the College has in the past been able to partner with other funding bodies in order to cover the full estimated cost of the recipient's overseas fees and maintenance, increasing the full value of the award to as much as £53,000.

The scholarship for Women Entrepreneurs is funded by a generous anonymous donor who wishes to support female students from overseas who (a) have resided since birth and are citizens of one of the countries that the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) has defined as developing; and (b) are pursuing a full-time Masters course that is intended to prepare them to return to their home country and develop or improve business opportunities there. The scholarship is thus intended to expand the role of women, particularly those wishing to start or develop their own business, in economies where they have been historically under-represented.

ÐÔÊӽ紫ý Pam Omidyar Scholarship for Students from Sudan

Postgraduate (Master’s) | £38,000 ~ Â£54,000 (annual) | Overseas

Funded by a generous gift from the Omidyar Trust, this scholarship will provide at least £38,000 towards the cost of MPhil fees and maintenance for at least one student from Sudan or South Sudan whose education has been disrupted by the conflict in that region. The College will seek additional partnerships, e.g. with the Cambridge Trust's Rowan Williams Scholarship Fund, in order to increase the size and number of the awards available for this purpose.

In 2024/2025 we were able to provide two full MPhil studentships for students from Sudan, through partnerships with the Cambridge Trust and hope to do the same in 2025/2026 (but this is not guaranteed).

Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences

 

Boyce Family Scholarship

Postgraduate (Master’s) | £28,000 ~ £32,000 (annual) | Overseas

The Boyce Family Scholarship offers up to £32,500 per year to cover the University Composition Fee for full-time one-year MPhil studies. The College will also seek co-funding from other University partners to increase the amount of the award to cover a student's full costs, but this cannot be guaranteed.

The scholarship is open exclusively to students who are normally resident in North America (including the Caribbean) and South America.

Preference will be given to the following:

• students from backgrounds underrepresented at postgraduate level in their field of study, in the first instance, to women and students from racially minoritised backgrounds.
• who are pursuing an MPhil in Land Economy, or another course in the social sciences (including Geography) with a focus on the built environment, sustainability, and/or conservation.

The scholarship was established by ÐÔÊӽ紫ýalumnus Mark Boyce, who completed his MPhil in Land Economy as a student at ÐÔÊӽ紫ýin 1993-94. It is intended to improve access to postgraduate education for outstanding students who face financial challenges in taking up a place at Cambridge.

Edgeworth Family Scholarship for Medical Research

Postgraduate (Master’s & PhD) | £8,000 (annual) | Home & Overseas

This scholarship provides £8,000 per year towards the costs of a postgraduate student engaged in medical research. It is funded by a generous legacy from the estate of Laura Hester Edgeworth in memory of her son Jonathan. Preference will be given to students engaged in research related to passive immunotherapy, particularly in relation to HIV prevention and treatment.

The College will make every effort to partner with other funding bodies to increase the amount of the award, but this cannot be guaranteed.

Joseph Petty Bursary in Metallurgy

One annual award of £1000 for a postgraduate pursuing studies in subjects relating to Metallurgy or Criminology (listed separately). Awards are based on academic merit.

£2,000 per year. A generous legacy from the estate of the late  to encourage women in STEM subjects.

Roger Needham Scholarship

One award of at least £8,000 per year for a postgraduate student, possibly increasing to £11,000 in subsequent years. The College will make every effort to partner with other University funding bodies to increase the amount of the award (but this is not guaranteed). Open to postgraduates in Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering, & Philosophy.

Open to postgraduates in Physical and Biological Sciences. For 2024/2025 entry preference may be given to students in Chemistry, Geography, Pharmacology, Physics, PDN (Physiology, Development & Neuroscience), Veterinary Medicine or Zoology.

Research Councils

 are the largest funder of PhD students at Cambridge. There are six UK Research Councils, and each council is also able to offer a limited number of studentships to international students. Some studentships also include funding for Master’s programmes taken prior to a PhD in a 1+3 year format.
